The MTA has its shortcomings...seasonal strikes, the G train etcetera.
HOWEVER, a marketing genius has made their gift shop a great resource for creative gift giving. Buy an antique subway map ($30) for your dad or a wooden subway train set for your nephew ($9.95 a car).
I like the Ecoist line of products. Especially the coin purse and clutch both made of hand woven, recycled, NYC subway maps.
About Ecoist
Ecoist plants a tree for every handbag sold. Ecoist works with Trees for the Future to plant trees in areas that have been affected by industrial development, natural disasters, fires, and other causes.
I also like the mosaic tile reproductions.
Get the tile from your subway stop or collect subway emblems of all the stops you've lived by. I like the Court Street mosaic ($36). Each reproduction is unique and created by NYC artisans. Features a high-glaze finish and a metal hanger on back.
