Violence and Protest in Georgia leads to a State of Emergency and January Election

President Mikheil Saakashvili has declared Georgia to be in a state of emergency and has announced an ad-hoc parlimentary election to be held Jan 5, 2008. The opposition has accused him of running a centralized government intolerant of dissent and undermined by high-level corruption and police and prosecutorial abuses.
